Happy Feet – The importance of foot care for seniors

Happy feet

Happy Feet. More than a cute movie, it’s crucial to your well-being. Mobility is a big part of maintaining an independent and active lifestyle. However, many of us believe that it is normal for our feet to hurt, and we simply endure the pain and ignore foot problems that could or should be treated.

Proper foot care by a reputable professional can significantly increase comfort levels and possibly avoid some preventable foot ailments. You can have a professional pedicurist come to your home with thoroughly sterilized instruments to perform proper trimming and filing of the nails, remove dry skin, tend to mild calluses and keep your feet soft and moisturized using only professional grade products for your specific needs. During that visit, you will be asked some general health questions to allow the therapist to proceed with your service based on the health information you provided. Your feet will be inspected and you will be advised of any visible issues. The therapist is not in the medical field and cannot diagnose health issues or ailments. If any issues are detected, the therapist will suggest that you seek a medical opinion.

The human foot has been called the mirror of health and foot care should be considered part of your health and personal hygiene rituals. It is important to inspect your feet regularly or have someone do this for you in oreder to keep Happy feet. If you notice any redness, swelling, cracks in the skin, or sores, consult your physician or podiatrist.

If you have diabetes you are at a greater risk of foot problems. In fact, the first signs of disease such as diabetes, arthritis and circulatory problems are often first detected in the foot. Some more common foot conditions and ailments include athlete’s foot, blisters, bunions, corns and calluses, hammertoes, ingrown nails, nail fungus, pinched nerves, warts, and heal pain. If you experience any of these symptoms, consult your physician or podiatrist. Luckily, many foot problems can be treated successfully. The bottom line is, don’t neglect your feet. Pull off those socks and give them the attention they need and deserve. Whether it is for pampering or overall wellness, your feet will thank you for it.
